  • Be a United States citizen

  • Not be in prison for a felony conviction;

  • Not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court;

  • Not claim the right to vote elsewhere

  • Be 16 or 17 years old

You will need one or more of the following;

If you only have a social security number, pre-register by mail (you may be asked to present ID when you cast a ballot at 18).

If you live in New York City and have a drivers license or a non-driver ID you can pre-register online with the New York City government.

If you have a drivers license or a non-driver ID for the state of New York, pre-register here (create an account).

*On each of these sites make sure to click the box asserting that you are at least 16 and understand that you are only pre-registering for when you turn 18.

To pre-register in person in New York City, bring your non-driver ID to the Board of Elections.

To pre-register in person in New York State, bring your non-driver ID to your county office. Find your Board of Elections office here.
